Day 7 - Lanzarote: Sunshine, Family, and a Tale of Two Ports
The day began in a haze — quite literally. A thick morning fog had settled over the ocean, and for a while, the ship’s horn sounded regularly as we carefully made our approach toward Arrecife, Lanzarote. The mysterious mist wrapped around us like a soft blanket, but as we neared the island, the clouds lifted, revealing a clear blue sky and glorious sunshine.
Disembarkation was a little slow today, as most of the excursions were departing at the same time, but eventually we were off the ship and ready for a wonderful reunion. Cousin Joe had sent us detailed directions and was waiting patiently for us at the port. Or so we thought!
As we stepped out, we began walking… and walking… and walking. Poor Joe’s back was not particularly pleased about this unexpected trek, and as we checked in with Cousin Joe, he reassured us he was “just nearby.” What none of us realised was that there are two ports in Lanzarote — we had docked at the old commercial port, while Cousin Joe was waiting at the cruise terminal several kilometres away!
After a series of phone calls, exchanged photos, and much laughter, we were finally found — rescued by Cousin Joe, who pulled up with a big smile and a warm welcome. Ever the gentleman, he also offered a lift to another couple from our ship who were stranded without a taxi.
Once reunited, we headed to the shopping centre, where Joe (my Joe!) hoped to replenish his wardrobe after discovering he’d left some of his swimwear at home. We made our way through a number of sports shops — success in part, with a few new bits added to his suitcase. I may also have found myself the proud owner of a new pair of trainers, perfect for my workouts and deck walks.
After a quick refreshment break, we set off to meet the family for a lovely lunch. They had arranged something special — Cabrito (kid) for everyone else, and a beautiful Burrata salad for me, light, fresh, and absolutely delicious.
The afternoon unfolded in the most heartwarming way — good food, laughter, and easy conversation with family and friends. I also managed to deliver the chickpea flour that Rebecca had sent along for Joe — a small but very satisfying mission completed!
Later, Margarita and Joe kindly dropped us back to the port, and once back on board, we made our way to the Destination Services desk to book our upcoming excursions for the African leg of our journey. It’s lovely to look ahead and start imagining all the incredible places still to come.
Dinner this evening was at long last in the Italian restaurant, and it was well worth the wait — perfectly prepared dishes, warm service, and that lovely relaxed atmosphere that always rounds off the day so beautifully.
Back in our suite, we caught up on calls with the family and, of course, on writing this very blog. The next two days will be sea days — a chance to rest, reflect, and recharge as we sail toward our next adventure.
Daily Reflection:
Today I was reminded that even the best-laid plans can take a few unexpected turns — and sometimes, those detours lead to the most wonderful memories.
