Day 13 - Banjul: Beach, History, and Gentle Rest
We arrived in Banjul, The Gambia, at 7 a.m., greeted by the hazy morning light and the gentle bustle of activity along the port. It was an early start for many, with several tours heading out straight away, as everyone needed to be back on board by 2:30 p.m. for a 3 p.m. sail away.
Our chosen excursion today was one of Joe’s selections — a beach day at a local hotel. After a few nights of restless sleep, Joe was feeling tired this morning, so it took us a little longer to get going. Still, we made it onto the bus with smiles and a quiet sense of adventure.
I had already been up early, squeezing in a gym session and a healthy breakfast before we set off. The air felt heavy and warm, and the promise of a relaxing day ahead was just what we both needed.
As we drove through Banjul, our guide shared stories of the city’s past. Once known as Bathurst, it was named after Henry Bathurst, the British Colonial Secretary during the early 19th century. I couldn’t help but wonder if he might be an ancestor of Sir Ben Bathurst, the current Governor of Gibraltar — what an interesting connection that would be!
In 1965, when The Gambia gained independence from the UK, the city was renamed Banjul — a name that feels softer, truer to its roots, and deeply connected to the land and people.
The drive to our hotel gave us a brief tour of Banjul, revealing a city full of contrasts — bright colours, lively markets, and friendly faces, all set against the backdrop of a slow, unhurried rhythm of life.
When we arrived at the hotel, we were greeted with warmth and smiles. Unfortunately, the sun refused to make an appearance today. Although it was still warm — well over 30 degrees — the sky stayed cloudy, and the beach was marked with a red flag, meaning no swimming allowed. Still, it didn’t matter. We found sofas by the poolside, settled in with our books, and simply enjoyed the peace and quiet of the day.
There’s something deeply relaxing about reading beside the water, even when the sun hides away. Time seemed to stretch, and for a few hours, the world felt very still.
Back on board later that afternoon, Joe took a well-deserved snooze, while I went for a walk around the deck, followed by a little quiet time with the daily crossword and sudoku, and catching up on a few calls and messages.
In the evening, I attended a special performance by Oleksandr Kuslya, a concert pianist and resident member of the Regent band. His music was uplifting and full of emotion, the kind of performance that stays with you long after the final note fades.
Dinner tonight was at Prime 7, always a favourite — elegant, delicious, and with that special Regent touch. Afterward, we made our way back to our suite, ready for an early night, hoping Joe would finally get a deep, restful sleep.
Tomorrow is another sea day — a chance to relax, reflect, and prepare for the next stage of our African voyage.
Daily Reflection:
Today reminded me that rest is just as sacred as discovery.
Even on cloudy days, there is beauty in slowing down, listening, and simply being.
Highlight of the Day:
✨ The beautiful and moving piano performance by Oleksandr Kuslya — a reminder of how music can soothe the soul and lift the spirit.
