Day 23 - Stories, Swells & the Magic of Crew Talent
This morning began much like the others — with my familiar routine of the gym followed by my refreshing veggie juice. There’s something grounding about these morning rituals; they help me feel anchored even when the ship itself is swaying beneath our feet.
After a shower and a quick coffee, I headed to one of the events I’d been looking forward to: Ray’s life story. Our wonderful Cruise Director stood on the stage and shared stories from his extraordinary career — and what a life he has lived.
From dancing with Ginger Rogers on the QE2 to hosting Nelson Mandela, his experiences span decades, oceans, and history itself. He even spoke fondly of his family home in the Lake District, where his brother runs an upmarket vegetarian B&B — somewhere I definitely want to visit one day. Listening to Ray was uplifting, entertaining, moving, and filled with the warmth of a life lived fully and joyfully.
After the talk, I returned to my latest book and finally turned the last page of Authentic Happiness by Martin Seligman. It was a dense read at times — heavy in places — but also full of wisdom, especially the chapters on strengths and the personal anecdotes he shared. Finishing it left me with a comforting awareness that I am already living in alignment with authentic happiness… living fully, meaningfully, and joyfully in all aspects of my life. I took time to look through my books before making my choice of my next book - When it is Darkest, by Rory O'Connor.
I spent a little time catching up with the crossword and sudoku, before meeting Joe for lunch in Compass Rose.
The ship, however, had other plans for us today — it was rocky, swaying heavily, and the pool was closed all day. The weather was cold, the sea choppy, and walking down a corridor felt a bit like being gently pushed from side to side. Most people stayed indoors, wrapped in cardigans with warm drinks in hand.
The afternoon was a practical but peaceful one. I spent time sorting out Joe’s premium Wi-Fi and updating his iPad apps so he can continue watching the Ashes and, naturally, his favourite… GB News. A labour of love, but worth it to see him so happy and connected.
Later, I got ready early because I didn’t want to miss the much-anticipated Krew Kapers — a talent show performed entirely by the ship’s crew. And truly… what an incredible display of talent.
From heartfelt songs to charming performances, the crew shone in ways we don’t usually get to see. One standout was Catherine from Reception, who is always so warm and welcoming. Her vocals were astounding — easily as beautiful and powerful as the professional entertainment team.
At the end, the staff (starting with the Captain himself) formed a guard of honour as we left the theatre — such a touching and elegant gesture that reflected the heart of Regent hospitality.
Afterwards, I joined Joe for the Shabbat service, which felt especially meaningful tonight as it was the last one with the current group, many of whom are disembarking in Cape Town. It will be interesting to see who joins for the next chapter.
Joe then enquired at reception about the ease of getting a taxi to the beach in Namibia tomorrow, before we headed for an early dinner at the Italian restaurant. Comforting, delicious, and just what we needed after a day of rocking seas.
To end the evening, I attended the show hosted by the entertainment singers, a beautiful performance celebrating the magic of Broadway — full of soaring vocals, nostalgia, and joy.
As we turn in tonight, the thought that keeps circling is this:
Tomorrow, we land in Namibia.
A whole new landscape, a whole new world waiting beyond the horizon.
Daily Reflection:
Today reminded me that everyone carries unseen gifts — stories, talents, strengths.
When shared, they brighten the world just like a lighthouse in a storm.
Highlight of the Day:
✨ Catherine from Reception singing in Krew Kapers — a breathtaking surprise and a reminder of how exceptional the crew truly are.
