Day 26 - Cape Town: Wine Country, Contrasts & A Beautiful New Chapter

As always, I began my day with a gym session followed by my fresh veggie juice — grounding rituals that help me feel centred no matter where in the world we wake up. After showering, I sat with a coffee, quietly working through my crossword and sudoku, enjoying those familiar moments of calm before the day unfolded.

We arrived into Cape Town ahead of schedule, but had to wait patiently while immigration completed their clearance before anyone could disembark. The excitement in the air was unmistakable — a new city, a new energy, and for many guests, their final port on this leg of the journey.

We had a quick lunch in Compass Rose, then made our way to the bus for our much-anticipated tour to Stellenbosch.

As we drove out of central Cape Town, the guide shared the story of the city — the history, the culture, the contrasts. The sight of the shanty towns appearing alongside the sleek, modern architecture of the city centre was deeply striking. It offered a powerful reminder of the vast inequalities that shape the reality of so many lives here. A sobering contrast, and a moment of reflection for us all.

Soon, the scenery shifted into rolling countryside, vineyards, and mountains — the natural beauty of the Cape Winelands felt almost cinematic.

Our first stop was the Blaauwklippen Winery, where we were welcomed for a guided tour followed by a wine tasting session featuring their signature wines. Joe was absolutely in his element. He loved every minute of it and declared it his favourite tour so far.

The star of the tasting for him was the dessert wine, which he adored so much that he bought himself two bottles to bring home. To top off his happiness, he discovered biltong, and instantly bought a generous supply for himself and Sam to enjoy together.

After the winery, we headed into the centre of Stellenbosch for a short walk. It was delightful — charming streets, beautiful buildings, relaxed atmosphere. I can easily see myself returning one day; it truly is a place with soul.

We then made our way back to the cruise terminal. As we stepped off the bus, Joe surprised me by suggesting we try the Beluga Restaurant for dinner rather than eating aboard the ship. It was a lovely change — great atmosphere, delicious food, and a little taste of Cape Town life on land.

After dinner, we returned to the ship to catch up on messages and prepare for tomorrow. With an early tour start, we settled in for an early night, ready for the next chapter of our South African adventure.

Daily Reflection:

Today reminded me that beauty and hardship often sit side by side in the world.
Travel invites us to witness both — and to hold gratitude, awareness, and compassion in equal measure.

Highlight of the Day:
Joe’s joy at the Blaauwklippen wine tasting — discovering his favourite dessert wine and stocking up on biltong like a child in a sweet shop.
