Day 28 - Mossel Bay: Wildlife, Wine & the Reality of South African Life
We woke up to a stunning sunrise this morning as the Navigator sailed gently into the tranquil waters of Mossel Bay. The sky was awash with pinks and golds, the mountains silhouetted in the distance — the kind of morning that reminds you just how magical this trip truly is.
I was up early and at the gym by 7 a.m., followed by a fresh breakfast on deck. Then it was time to get ready for our tender disembarkation. The waters were a bit choppy, so boarding the tender required a little agility — a careful jump and a steady hand!
Joe was in luck today: we were first to reach the minibus, which meant he finally got his beloved front-row seat, ensuring maximum comfort and viewing pleasure.
Our guide for the day was excellent, full of insight, humour, and deep knowledge of the local area and history. It’s amazing how much richer a place becomes when someone passionate is explaining it.
Jakkalsvlei Winery – Jackals Valley Delight
Our first stop was the picturesque Jakkalsvlei Winery — “Jackals Valley.” This lovely vineyard sat nestled between rolling hills, and the wines were delicious. The standout favourite was the Pink Moscato, which earned high praise from the group (and from Joe!).
Aloe Centre – Nature’s Healing Garden
Next, we visited the Aloe Centre, where we learned how aloe grown in South Africa differs from aloe vera and the many health benefits associated with it. The demonstration was fascinating, and, naturally, we had the chance to make a few purchases. The products were beautifully curated and felt so local and authentic.
In the café, I spotted jars of poached fruit made by another Brenda!
Knowing this is one of Joe’s absolute favourites, I jokingly thought: perhaps a future sideline business? Brenda’s Poached Delights has a nice ring to it!
Wildlife & Scenic Beauty
As we journeyed back toward the ship, the landscape unfolded before us like a living postcard — ostriches, goats, cattle, and even elephants roaming freely, minding their own business under the warm African sun. The mountain ranges were absolutely magnificent, rugged and grand, forming the perfect backdrop to the lush countryside.
But alongside this beauty, we once again saw the harsher reality.
Just like in Cape Town, the shanty towns were sobering — overcrowded, stretched to the limits, with the government struggling to keep up with demand for housing and infrastructure. We learned that school classes often exceed 40 students, and unemployment is over 34%. It was a stark reminder of the deep inequalities present here.
Back to the Ship & Setting Sail
Soon we were back at the port, preparing to board the tender for the return to the ship. Once everyone was safely back on board, the Captain set sail toward Port Elizabeth, continuing our journey along the beautiful South African coast.
Joe went straight to check on his spa and PT appointments for the coming days (he has a very full schedule!), while I prepared for a quiet evening.
We enjoyed an early dinner, knowing we have another early start tomorrow for our next excursion.
The ship rocked gently as we drifted deeper into the night — another day of discovery behind us, and another waiting just over the horizon.
Daily Reflection:
Travel is a tapestry of beauty and reality — the mountains and wildlife, the shanty towns and struggle, the joy in small details and the questions that linger.
Today reminded me to hold it all with compassion.
Highlight of the Day:
✨ Being surrounded by wildlife — ostriches, goats, cattle, and even elephants — all roaming freely against the breathtaking backdrop of Mossel Bay’s mountains.
