Day 31 - Choppy Seas, Quiet Moments & A Night of West End Magic
The seas continue to be choppy as we make our way across the vast Indian Ocean, with the ship rolling and lifting in long, steady sweeps. We woke to rain this morning, soft but steady, so after heading to the gym, I grabbed my veggie juice and decided that today was definitely not a day for sitting outside.
Instead, it became a gorgeous rest day.
I spent the morning tucked away in the library and Coffee Connection, doing my crossword and sudoku while sipping a warm drink and listening to the rain tapping softly against the windows. I read for a while too — the perfect setting for being still, reflective, and cosy while the waves moved beneath us.
The afternoon was even more peaceful. I curled up in our cabin, letting myself rest while gazing at the endless ocean, mesmerised by the swell and fall of the water. While reading my current book, "When It Is Darkest," a sentence struck me deeply:
“There comes a beautiful point where you have to stop trying to escape yourself,
or improve yourself, and just really accept yourself.”
It stopped me in my tracks — a line I think I will carry with me for a while.
Definitely food for thought.
Meanwhile, Joe moved at his own gentle pace today. He postponed his beauty treatments to next week and instead sought the help of a very kind gentleman who managed to sort out his phone and iPad, allowing him to watch the football again — much to his delight.
Dinner & A Stunning Show
Dinner tonight was at Compass Rose, and Joe fell in love with the consommé — so much so that he asked for seconds. It’s becoming a recurring theme on this trip: Joe discovering his new favourite dish of the day!
After Joe ordered his cheese, I quietly slipped away so I wouldn’t miss the evening show — and I am so glad I did.
Tonight’s act was Phillip Browne, a West End star best known for his role in The Lion King. He was absolutely phenomenal — effortlessly charming, funny, and full of presence. His repertoire ranged from uplifting West End classics to the smooth warmth of Nat King Cole.
But the most breathtaking moment was his rendition of Amazing Grace — performed completely a cappella, no microphone, no accompaniment, just his voice filling the entire theatre. Goosebumps.
He ended the night with Dancing on the Ceiling by Lionel Richie, getting the whole audience up on their feet. It was pure joy.
Christmas Arrives Overnight
As we made our way back to our cabins, we noticed the ship’s Christmas elves appearing, sprinkling their festive magic after dark. Decorations, garlands, and lights were slowly beginning to take shape. Tomorrow, I suspect, the ship will look beautifully transformed.
Ray has also promised improved weather tomorrow — very good news for Joe, who is eagerly hoping for a pool day at last!
Daily Reflection:
Sometimes the greatest journeys happen in stillness —
a gentle sea, a quiet book, and a sentence that shifts something inside you.
Highlight of the Day:
✨ Phillip Browne’s a cappella rendition of “Amazing Grace” — breathtaking, soulful, and unforgettable.
