Day 63 - New Year’s Eve in Langkawi ๐ ✨
Happy New Year’s Eve to you all, and a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has followed our travels and shared such kind messages along the way. We have one month left before heading back to Gibraltar — and the thought of returning to reality, and not blogging daily, already feels a little strange.
Today’s excursion left at 8:45am, so there was just enough time for a quick gym session. The morning was still dark, a gentle reminder that soon those early, sun-filled mornings will give way to darker starts — perhaps easing me back into what awaits at home.
After some deliberation, Joe decided to come on the trip, which in itself felt like a win. He slept through the first part of the drive, only hopping off briefly for a comfort stop.
Langkawi Discoveries
Our guide, Goh, was incredibly knowledgeable and clearly proud of Langkawi, sharing its history and local insights throughout the drive.
Our first stop was the Batik Arts & Crafts Centre — officially a cultural visit, unofficially a shopping stop. I may (or may not) have come away with a couple of new kaftans… it would have been rude not to.
Next was Eagle Square, the island’s central hub and a hive of activity today as preparations were underway for the New Year’s Eve celebrations later tonight.
We then visited Underwater World, home to a wide variety of reptiles, flamingoes, birds, countless fish species, sharks, and penguins. Joe declared it “not a patch on the one in Doha”, but it was still interesting to see.
Back Onboard & Familiar Wins
Joe took the shuttle back so he could make it in time for lunch, while I opted for a leisurely walk back to the ship, easily getting my steps in for the day. I chose room service for lunch, a quiet and restful choice.
Joe then headed to the quiz — and yes, entirely predictably by now — his team came first again. The winning streak continues unabated.
In the evening, Joe went off to enjoy the James Bond–themed music show, while I treated myself to something I’ve really missed: a hair blow-dry at the spa — such a simple luxury, but it felt wonderful.
New Year’s Eve Reflections
I spent some time catching up with friends and family, before getting ready for our special New Year’s Eve dinner in Compass Rose. After dinner, rather than joining the crowds on the pool deck to welcome in the New Year, we chose to return quietly to our room.
Much of our conversation this evening was spent remembering our dear Diana, who is so deeply missed. I know she would have loved hearing all about this trip — every detail, every moment.
Looking Ahead
Tomorrow brings another early start, as we arrive at 7am in Penang.
As the year turns, I feel nothing but gratitude — for the journey, the memories, the people, and the privilege of living this chapter so fully.
Daily Reflection:
Some New Year’s Eve moments are loud and glittering —
others are quiet, reflective, and filled with love.
Tonight was the latter, and it was perfect. ๐
