Day 81 - Townsville, Old Friends & Full Hearts

Today was the day we had been waiting for throughout the whole trip—arriving in Townsville to finally see our dear friends, the Robinsons. It has been 20 years since we last saw each other in person, yet the moment we met it honestly felt like it had only been two days.

We sailed into Townsville at 7am, and I watched our arrival from the balcony while sipping my coffee—one of those quiet, grounding moments that felt extra special knowing what the day would bring. Jane and I had been messaging, and we arranged to meet at the port terminal before heading into town for the Sunday market.

Seeing Jane, Phil, and Tilly-Belle waiting for me was incredibly emotional. Real hugs instead of virtual ones—it was everything. Wandering through the market together, Tilly-Belle bought me a freshly made fruit juice, which was absolutely delicious and such a thoughtful gesture.

After a quick stroll, we headed back to their very welcoming home for some delicious tropical fruits and to finally meet Hector. That moment was truly special—especially when he gave me a heart-to-heart hug that just melted me. One of those moments that stays with you forever.

Soon we got the message that Joe was ready to be picked up, so it was time to load the car with beach essentials. Joe was absolutely delighted to see everyone again after all these years. Naturally, his first stop was the chemist (some things never change!), with Hector kindly accompanying him. Then it was essential business—buying beers for the beach.

Next, they took us up Castle Hill, giving us breathtaking views across Townsville, out to Magnetic Island, and over the sprawling countryside. While asking someone to take a group photo, we spotted Steven from the ship, so of course we asked him to capture the moment for us.

Back at the house, Joe properly met Tilly-Belle, then we headed off to the beach. We found a lovely spot to set up. Joe and Phil went into the water—staying within the stinger net, as you must here—while Jane and I walked along the shoreline, dipping our feet into the warm sea and catching up on twenty years of life. Time just dissolved.

Lunch was at C-Bar, overlooking the sea. Just as we started eating, the heavens opened with a dramatic five-minute storm, adding to the day’s character. During lunch, the Robinsons surprised us with the most thoughtful gifts.

Tilly-Belle, who is incredibly talented, gave us a beautiful painting of Joe and me from a photo taken years ago when we were riding a camel—so moving. Joe loved his Townsville T-shirt and crocodile bottle opener (which I know will get plenty of use back home). I received inspirational pebbles and some lovely tea, gifts full of meaning and care.

After lunch, we returned to the beach. Hector brought his guitar, and at Joe’s request he played for us—an impromptu beach performance that even drew praise from people nearby. Jane and I then took a peaceful walk along the boardwalk up to a viewing platform, soaking in the calm and connection.

All too soon, it was time to pack up, return to the house, and then head back to the cruise terminal. Saying goodbye was tearful but our hearts were absolutely full. Joe said many times that this was the best day of the entire trip, and I couldn’t agree more.

Our conversations throughout the day drifted back to the Bunbury days, where these friendships were formed—bonds that have remained steadfast through time, distance, joy, and loss. We remembered those we’ve lost, especially David English, the man who brought us all together and whose spirit was felt throughout the day.

Back on the ship, we took time to reflect on what a truly extraordinary day it had been—one filled with love, laughter, and new memories layered beautifully over old ones. A truly wonderful day with a truly wonderful family, each one inspirational in their own way.

As we sailed out of Townsville onto our next stop on this amazing journey, the sunset was absolutely stunning.

Dinner was at Compass Rose, followed by an early night, as tomorrow brings another full and exciting day when we arrive at Airlie Beach. I hope that I have given justice through my words, in today's post for just how wonderful life felt today and how extremely grateful I am for all that I have in my life, near and far.

🌿 Daily Reflection

True connection doesn’t fade with time. Real friendships pause, not end—and when they resume, they do so with depth, warmth, and an unspoken understanding that no distance can undo.

Highlight of the Day

Reuniting with the Robinsons after 20 years—proof that love, laughter, and friendship transcend time. 💛
